West’s Markham wins 3 events, but finishes 2nd in tight 400

IOWA CITY – Alonzo Markham and Kevin Dibbern have competed against one another for six years.

The latest installment produced a photo-finish in the 400-meter dash and a more defined result in the 200 Saturday at the Class 4A district meet at Iowa City West. Iowa City High’s Dibbern edged Markham in the 400 by .012 seconds, while Iowa City West’s Markham beat Dibbern in the 200.

It took at least two minutes for the duo to confirm the winner in the 400. As they stood next to the finish line, reporters asked them who won the race. Dibbern spoke up, “I think I did.” Markham seemed to confirm: “I think I leaned too early.”

It was the only blot on Markham’s individual performance. He won the 100 in addition to his 200 crown and anchored the 4×100 to victory. But he expressed nothing but admiration for Dibbern, the defending state champion in the 400.

“That’s how it was last week between him and me at conference,” Markham said. “He ended up getting me at the end.”

The frequent 25 m.p.h. winds aided both runners in the first 200 meters but brutally challenged both on the stretch run.

“The wind it came at an angle on the backstretch, because I didn’t really work that hard on the back stretch,” Markham said. “But when I got on the straightaway, it just kicked (me). I was huffing and puffing trying to get to the finish line.”

Cedar Rapids Washington’s Lewi Manirumva won three events to pace the Warriors to the boys’ team title. Manirumva won the 1,600, the 3,200 and anchored the distance medley team to victory. With the wind a factor, Manirumva concentrated more on the final result and less on the method.

“The important thing to run and compete, not the times,” he said.

Three-time defending girls’ state champion Iowa City West edged cross-town rival Iowa City by eight points to claim the district title. West won three of the four field events and beat Iowa City High head-to-head in the 4×400 to clinch the title.

Iowa City High’s Meg Richardson and Rebecca Rethwisch made it a goal to beat Iowa City High. But their performance in the 3,000 made it difficult for the “dynamic distance duo that dominates” as they said as they left the track following the race.

“That’s what we wanted, we wanted one and two,” said Rethwisch, who finished second at 4:55.184. “We really like to run together and we work together and we wanted to get first and second.”

The top four place-winners in each boys’ event automatically qualifies for next weekend’s state meet in Des Moines. The top two place-winners in each girls’ event qualifies for state, followed by the next-best 12 results from throughout the state.
